Me Stalalla olemme lahtelaisia ja hyvin ylpeitä siitä. Tänä vuonna 2021 voimme olla erityisen ylpeitä, koska Lahti on ensimmäinen suomalainen kaupunki, jolla on kunnia olla Euroopan ympäristöpääkaupunki. Olemme osa Lahtea, jopa nimeämme myöten. Me STALAlla, STAinless LAhdessa, arvostamme kestävää tulevaisuutta ja tekoja sen saavuttamiseksi.
Lahti on perinteinen teollisuuskaupunki, jolla on vahva osuus Suomen kehityksessä. 1970-luvulle saakka jatkui nopean kasvun ja teollistumisen kausi, joka rasitti ympäristöä. Stala perustettiin Lahdessa vuonna 1972, jolloin kaupungistuminen ja uudisrakentaminen oli kiivasta. Lahtelaisista juurista oltiin jo tuolloin niin ylpeitä, että se haluttiin tuoda jopa yrityksen nimeen, ja näin syntyi STALA, STAinless LAhti. Noihin aikoihin Vesijärvi oli yksi Suomen saastuneimmista järvistä, mutta Lahti aloitti kunnianhimoisen vesiensuojelutyön jo 1970-luvulla, kun kaupungin suurimman järven näkyvä rehevöityminen haluttiin pysäyttää.
Näistä ajoista on päästy pitkälle – Euroopan johtavaksi ympäristökaupungiksi. Kiertotalouden edelläkävijänä Lahti ei ainoastaan vähennä jätteiden määrää vaan myös hyödyntää syntyvän jätteen mahdollisimman tehokkaasti. Alueella syntyvästä jätteestä kolmasosa kiertää uusien tuotteiden raaka-aineeksi ja kaksi kolmannesta hyödynnetään energiantuotannossa. Tavoitteet ovat kuitenkin vielä korkeammalla: Lahden tavoitteena on olla täysin jätteetön kiertotalouskaupunki vuonna 2050.
Stalan toiminta on aina perustunut tehokkaaseen resurssien käyttöön. Jo 1980-luvun alussa Stalan rosteriset postilaatikot syntyivät, kun mietittiin, miten pesupöytien allasaukoista syntyvää hukkaa voisi hyödyntää. Nykyään kiertotalous Stalalle tarkoittaa mm. 100% rosterijätteen kierrättämistä sekä parhaimmillaan jopa 90 %:n kierrätysasteen omaavan raaka-aineen käyttöä.
Mitä Lahti edellä, sitä muu maailma perässä. Lahti on asettanut kunnianhimoiset ilmastotavoitteet ja tähtää hiilineutraaliuteen vuoteen 2025 mennessä – kymmenen vuotta Suomen hallitusohjelman ja 25 vuotta EU:n asettamaa tavoitetta aiemmin. Suomen ensimmäisenä suurena hiilineutraalina kaupunkina Lahti näyttää suuntaa niin Suomessa kuin kansainvälisestikin.
Stalan tavoitteena on olla hiilineutraali vuoteen 2035 mennessä. Lisäksi olemme sitoutuneet vähentämään syntyvän jätteen määrää tehtaallamme 10 % vuosittain ja kierrättämään kaiken syntyvän jätteen vuonna 2030. Sama kunnianhimoinen 10 % vuosittainen vähennystavoite koskee myös veden- ja energiankäyttöä.
Kestävän tulevaisuuden rakentaminen vaatii tekoja. Meille on hyvin tärkeää, että myös tulevat sukupolvet voivat nauttia puhtaasta elinympäristöstään niin kuin mekin olemme saaneet siitä nauttia. Siksi olemmekin käärineet hihamme ja ryhtyneet tekoihin.
Tehtaallamme Lahdessa olemme siirtyneet käyttämään vain ja ainoastaan uusiutuvaa tuulienergiaa vuonna 2020. Toimintamme vedenkulutuksen pienentämiseksi ovat olleet tehokkaita ja olemme saaneet pienennettyä vedenkulutusta tuoteyksikköä kohden vuonna 2020 noin 16 % edelliseen vuoteen verrattuna. Samaan aikaan olemme pienentäneet energiankulutusta noin 10 % tuoteyksikköä kohden. Vaarallisen kemikaalijätteen määrä tuoteyksikköä kohden on pienentynyt noin 87 % samalla ajanjaksolla. Nämä ovat uskomattoman hienoja saavutuksia, jotka kertovat siitä, että otamme kestävän kehityksen tosissamme.
Olemme matkalla. Emme ole valmiita tai täydellisiä, mutta otamme suuria askelia kohti parempaa tulevaisuutta. Meillä on kunnianhimoiset tavoitteet ja vastuu niihin pääsemiseksi. Sitoudumme ihmisten hyvinvointiin, turvallisuuteen, luontoon, yhteiseen hyvään sekä kestävään tulevaisuuteen. Huominen on sellainen, millaiseksi itse sen teemme - yhdessä.
